About Migration, weekly
I used to co-write Give Me Your Tired, a weekly migration newsletter. This Medium is going to be a bit like that — hopefully weekly, summarising but also analysing migration news — but with a bit more focus on telling you something useful, and less on trying to be comprehensive. (Not because GMYT was bad, it was great, but because there were four of us doing it!) I’ve also done other blogging and journalism about migration and other stuff, as well as larger bits of policy research. I want to bring a bit of all those flavours to this newsletter.
Feel free to tell me what you’d be interested in reading here. I don’t have a big plan, but some of the gaps that I’ve noticed are:
In Australia, there is a lot of writing (mostly by migration lawyers) about ultra-specific changes to the migration bureaucracy, and a fair amount of journalistic blaring about the politics of migration, but not that much written in between those two levels
There’s also a huge focus in journalistic writing, but also research, on refugees and asylum seekers — which makes sense, because Australia’s refugee policy is a huge political issue and a humanitarian travesty, but leaves limited coverage of a lot of other migration issues
Internationally, there is not that much being written that compares migration policy developments in different places and relates them to each other. (There’s plenty of academic writing about this, and some tweeting by those academics, but that’s not quite the same.)
About me
I used to work for UNHCR in Tunisia, at a London think-tank, Global Future, and writing analysis of migration and integration policy for Apolitical. I’ve also done research for the Migrant Workers Centre in Australia. I’m now working in Melbourne, in something unrelated, and writing this newsletter to keep myself in touch with the world of refugee and migration issues.
